The best dining area is the most colorful. But how to get colorful without getting too kitschy? Here are some ideas, stolen from artists and designers. The kitchen above belongs to an artist and her furniture designer husband. Quite obviously. The secrets of this magical spot? Lots of colors on large scale, lots of open shelving to let natural light in and an insane amount of flowers. Ready. I must try this at home.

But if there is an occasion to celebrate it is okay to get kitschy. At least, when I celebrate. The Australian stylist Glen Proebstel gives us the how-to here. Start of with a white table and white chairs. Then load the table with colorful flowers so there is hardly any space left for the food. And don't forget colorful sculptures (how cool is that pink deer!). And cloth napkins with different prints. And mismatched plates from your grandma or the thrift store. I hope, I get to look my birthday table like this at the end of the month.

The Swedish stylist Lo Bjurulf takes a little less loud turn on colors. With simple wooden furniture, warm colors and lots of sunlight. So beautiful. Now I want to eat something. In a colorful place.
