Apartment Tour: Silke's Inner City Gem

Die Wohnung meiner Freundin Silke ist mein liebstes Zuhause, wenn ich nicht zu Hause bin. Geschlafen habe ich dort noch nie, aber unendlich viel geträumt. Silke ist eine Seelenverwandte. Wenn ich bei ihr bin, bin ich einfach nur ich und nicht selten merken wir, dass wir uns um die gleichen Dinge Gedanken machen. Vor vielen Jahren haben wir zusammen gewohnt und sind mit der Zeit zusammengewachsen wie ein altes Ehepaar - aber das ist eine Geschichte für sich.

Heute möchte ich euch Silkes unglaublich schöne Wohnung im Herzen von Nürnberg zeigen. Diese Frau besitzt den Luxus, in fünf Gehminuten entweder im Stadtzentrum oder im Pegnitztal zu sein.

My friend Silke's apartment is my favorite home away from home. I've never slept there but dreamed a lot in her living room. Silke is a soul mate. When I'm with her I'm just me and very often we find that the same thoughts occupy our minds. We were room mates many years ago and slowly grew into an old couple - but that is a story for another time.

This time I would like to show you Silke's exceedingly beautiful apartment right in the heart of Nuremberg's old town. This girl has the luxury of a five-minute-walk to either the city center or the waterfront park of the river Pegnitz that flows through Nuremberg.

Als erstes: der Sekretär. Wann immer ich zu Besuch komme, ist er mein erstes Ziel. Man weiß nie, was man dort findet. Silke arrangiert dort ihr Geschenke, Schätze und Postkarten. Ein Fest fürs Auge.

Die Porzellantaube auf dem Couchtisch ist eines von Silkes Lieblingsstücken. Ihr Onkel hat sie ihr aus den Niederlanden mitgebracht. Als Raumausstatter teilt er ihre Liebe für Design, Flohmärkte und Wohnräume, die das Leben noch schöner machen.

To start this story off, here is the corner I always run to first when I visit Silke. You never know what you will find on that bureau. She would display her latest gifts, treasures and cards there. A feast for the eyes.

The porcelain dove on her coffee table is one of Silke's favorite pieces. Her uncle brought it back for her from the Netherlands. Being an interior decorator he shares her love for design, flea markets and living spaces that make life even more beautiful.

Ein Wort zum Balkon - oder auch mehrere. Im Sommer wird hier gewohnt. Die Sitzbank in der Ecke ist Silkes Lieblingsplatz. Hier kann sie den ersten Kaffee des Tages und die Stille des Abends genießen. Wenn Gäste kommen, warten die Equipales, traditionelle mexikanische Sessel. Silke hält sie in Ehren, nicht nur, weil sie eines der vielen Hinweise auf ihr geliebtes Geburtsland sind. Vielmehr ist dieses Set das Geschenk von einem Freund ihres Vaters, eines mexikanischen Künstlers. Silke hat ihn sehr bewundert und er verstarb kurze Zeit nachdem er ihr dieses schöne Geschenk gemacht hatte.

One word on the balcony - okay, maybe a couple. That is were almost all time is spent in summer. Silke's favorite nook is the little bench in the corner. It's the perfect spot to enjoy the first coffee of the day and the silence of the evening. And when guests join, the set of Equipales awaits. They are cherished beyond measure as they were gifted to Silke from a friend of her dad's, a Mexican painter she adored and who died not long after making this beautiful gift. They are one of the many signs of her beloved birth country around her home. 

Sobald es draußen zu kalt ist, wird der große Hocker neben der Heizung schnell zum neuen Lieblingsplatz. Er ist immer mit mindestens einem Lammfell und zwei Kissen bestückt - gemütlicher geht's kaum. Hier habe ich dann auch ein kleines Privatkonzert bekommen. Silke hat eine wundervolle Stimme und einen ebensolchen Musikgeschmack. Als beinahe musikalische Analphabetin habe ich davon sehr profitiert. Etwa zwei Drittel der Musik in meinem Besitz habe ich irgendwann einmal von Silke geschenkt bekommen. Sehr geschätzte Geschenke übrigens.  

When it's not warm enough outside, the nook next to the heater quickly becomes the new favorite spot. Always covered with at least one lamb skin and two pillows it's as cozy as it gets. This is when I got a little private concert. Silke has a great voice and also taste in music. Being almost musically illiterate, about two thirds of the music I own were gifts from Silke. Very nice gifts, I must say.

Silke ist eine Person, die Wochen mit einer Sache beschäftigt ist, die einmal ihr Interesse geweckt hat. Daher ihre große Büchersammlung und ihr Eames Stuhl. Ihr erkennt hier keinen Zusammenhang? Nun, wenn Silke sich für ein (nicht selten politisches) Thema interessiert, wird sie alle Bücher zum Thema lesen, die ihr in die Finger kommen und zusätzlich nach Dokus und Filmen suchen. Und wenn sie sich in ein bestimmtes Design verliebt, ist ebay nicht mehr sicher vor ihr. Sie kann unglaublich viel Zeit damit verbringen, das Richtige zum richtigen Preis zu recherchieren. So kam ihr liebster Stuhl in ihr Leben. Das ist wahre Liebe.

Als ich Silke schließlich fragte, welche ihre schönste Erinnerung in ihrer Wohnung ist, fiel ihr die Antwort leicht: "Meine liebsten Momente hier sind die, die ich mit Menschen verbracht habe, die ich liebe. Meine Wohnung soll ein Ort sein, der schön ist und Ruhe und 'Willkommen' ausstrahlt. Es macht mich glücklich, meine Freunde um mich zu haben." Diesen Wohlfühlort zu schaffen, ist ihr gelungen, würde ich sagen.

Silke is a person who will spend weeks with something that arouse her interest. Hence her big amount of books and her Eames chair. Doesn't seem to have a connection? Well, when Silke gets interested in a (quite often political) topic she will go out and buy all the books she can find on it, and search for documentaries and movies. And when she falls in love with a particular design ebay is not safe from her. She can spend tremendous times searching for the right item at the right price. This is how her favorite chair came to her home. That's true love. 

When I asked Silke about her favorite memory in this apartment, the answer came quickly: "The most beautiful moments here were all those spent with people I love. I want this apartment to be as welcoming and cozy as possible so that my loved ones feel welcome here. Having my friends around me makes me happy." Mission accomplished, I'd say.
