Designing a Website? Be a Little Bit Lazy

The other day I watched a talk given by Ethan Marcotte at the Web Conference An Event Apart. It's titled "Laziness in the Time of Responsive Design". He got me at lazy. Yes, I do go to work every day, my apartment is fairly clean and I do my master's on the side BUT I'm also always on the search of possibilities that will make any of these areas of life a little less crowded. Did Ethan Marcotte deliver on his promise to show new ways of being lazy at work? Yes and no.

Let Go of the Idea of Controlling the Web Experience 

Here comes the lazy part. It's about letting go of the wish to be in full control of what the user of your website will see. What sounds so Zen is owed to the number of different devices we access the web on today. While in print you control exactly what goes where and what the reader will see, on the web you can't anymore. Not only are there countless different formats but also many different input mechanisms: keyboard, touch, speech or a combination of these.

What do you do as a web designer who has lost the control his print colleagues have? You let go. As designer Trent Walton beautifully put it: "I traded the control I had in Photoshop for a new kind of control – using flexible grids, flexible images, and media queries to build not a page, but a network of content that can be rearranged at any screen size to best convey a message." Today you can't plan out the whole experience but you can design the chunks of content which will make up the whole. These chunks will then be inserted into the grid of a site. Thus a website will look differently to many readers but it's up to the web designer to make sure all content is presented within a grid system that adapts well to all kinds of formats. And this is where laziness ends.

Design Your Website Grid Wisely 

Web designers need to mainly be concerned about the grid that holds their designs. Grid layouts offer an amazing amount of possibilities but they're not trivial to code nicely. When done perfectly, as a reader you will never think: "Oh, this website was meant to be read on desktop." or "That's a weird break here on this site." The grid will adapt seamlessly on any device, following Trent Walton's maxim: "Like cars designed to perform in extreme heat or on icy roads, websites should be built to face the reality of the web's inherent variability." 

Side Note: Regularly Take Out the Trash on Your Site

All of us producing content for the web are guilty of hoarding it. We don't want to throw out stuff that is still perfectly fine. Instead we hide non-priority content on level four of our navigation and hope for the best. Level four in your navigation is like the dark corner of your closet that never sees light and which you keep ignoring because you know it would take weeks to clean it out. And you don't need that corner so badly anyway, so... Guess what: As soon as you make your site responsive and cleverly hide your navigation behind a hamburger, your user will suffer from your mess. Ever opened a navigation on your smartphone and almost got stabbed by a navigation with a thousand sub navigation items where you totally got lost? Don't do that to your readers. Be nice and tidy up. Is really all of your content helpful? I don't think so either. Deactivate sites your user doesn't need and put your favorite content up on your portfolio if it makes you feel better.

UX Design: The Invisible Magic Behind Everything We Use

This semester of my master's program is a lot about user experience. Makes perfectly sense if you study content strategy. I expected a lot about font size, white space and button colors – the graphic designer in me would have loved that. To my surprise the whole subject went a lot deeper, five levels deep to be exact.

When I look at an app or a website or anything for that matter, I first evaluate the thing in front of me by its appearance. If it's pretty, it has much better chances to be brought home. OF COURSE, I will check its functionality but you will often see me swearing under my breath because of the "stupid" vacuum cleaner or my fitness tracker, because I checked usability too late.

If you do UX properly you start out with answering the questions: What and for whom? Do you really know? Have you talked to your prospective users? Do you know what they need? Which of their problems are you trying to solve anyways? And what answers will your solution provide?

You work your way up from there. It's a long way, and it's stony, and it will rain often, and you will be hungry and cold, and you'll have to start over many times... Huh, UX design starts to sound a lot like Lord of the Rings! But if you follow the good path you will earn applause and fame and you will be showered with flower petals – not. If you really succeed, no one will ever take notice of your existence. Everything you've done will be taken for granted and only a small group of UX geeks will lay down flowers at your grave.

My Fitness Tracker Doesn't Speak Human or: How I learned to value great User Experience

Like many people, I skip manuals when it comes to software. I have become used to help text when I hover over buttons, I know that most apps and websites will use the same wording for similar things. As I've learned the language of the web, most functionalities have become self-explanatory. Be it on my phone or my laptop – most times I find what I am looking for fast. 

Only when this expectation is disappointed do I become aware of the great work of UX designers – or the lack of it. Last week, I was looking for the function on my fitness tracker that would light up the display when I raise my wrist into reading position. I skipped through all possibilities that would even faintly make sense to me and eventually gave up. Googling the manual I found out that I have to go to "Device" and click "Wake-up gesture". I would have looked under "Display". That I would have still found. My native language of German made it impossible for me though. There it says "Aktivierungsgeste" (translates to "activation gesture"). Just in case you wondered: That expression doesn't mean a thing in German.

Stumbling over this odd wording I skipped through all of the settings and came to the conclusion that they did not build a navigation that felt natural. It looks a lot more like the manufacturer had developed a huge set of great functions and then had trouble squeezing it all into a tiny navigation. After learning about UX design I wondered whether they had done proper user research and whether they had thoroughly tested the fitness tracker. We are talking about a big and well-known brand here, and still I think they probably skimped on some testing in order to get the product to market faster.

An Ode to the Unknown UX Designer

Now, when I come accross an application or a website that simply works, I grin broadly and silently thank the smart designer in the background. I will never know his name but will stay forever grateful.

By the way: Can anyone recommend a small fitness tracker that has GPS built in? Thanks in advance.

How to Fill Your Scrapbook Without Spending on Accessories

Es soll eine Zeit gegeben haben, in der Sammelalben mit gesammelten Bildern geschmückt waren. Heute heißen sie Scrapbooks und für das Zubehör kann man ein kleines Vermögen im Bastelladen hinlegen. Nicht dass ich all die hübschen Sticker, Stempel und Motiv-Locher nicht schön fände, aber was solch ein Album anbelangt bin ich eher traditionell unterwegs. Hier eine kleine Anleitung, um zu den Wurzeln des Sammelalbums zurückzukehren.

Once upon a time scrap books were put together from scraps. Today you can spend a medium-sized fortune on scrap book accessories and embellishments. While I admire all those cute little stickers, stamps and hole punchers I am rather more traditional here. Here I've cllected a few ideas on how to get back to the roots of scrapbooking.

1. Get Basic Craft Supplies

Um loszulegen braucht ihr nur ein Notizbuch, eine Schere, einen Klebestift und ein paar Rollen Washi Tape. Letzteres ist auch der einzige "Luxus", der in meinem Scrapbook landet.

To get started you only need a notebook, a good pair of scissors, a glue stick and a few rolls of washi tape (the only "fancy" stuff I use for scrapbooking).

2. Collect Scraps

Ich habe eine Box voll gesammeltem Bildmaterial. Dort finden sich Ausschnitte aus Magazinen, Katalogen und Broschüren. Dazu Schokoladenpapier, Flyer und Kleideretiketten. Werbeaufkleber, Postkarten und Buntpapier. Eben heute habe ich bei Lush eine Broschüre zu Konservierungsstoffen mitgenommen - mit äußerst schönen Illustrationen. Sammelt einfach alles, was euer ästhetisches Empfinden anspricht.

I have a box full of pictures. You will find pictures from magazines in there, from catalogs and brochures. There are also nice chocolate wrappers, fyers and clothing tags. Stickers with ads on them, post cards and colored paper. Just today I have taken a brochure on preservatives in cosmetics with me while shopping at Lush. It's full of beautiful illustrations. Simply start collecting everything that matches your aesthetics.

3. Cut, Arrange & Paste

Nehmt euch Zeit und lasst eure Materialsammlung auf euch wirken. Welche Bilder passen gut zusammen? Welche Farben würden die Komposition ergänzen? Passt ein Lieblingszitat oder ein Tagebucheintrag dazu? Schneidet, arrangiert und klebt, was das Zeug hält. Und nicht wundern - manche Seiten werdet ihr als sehr gelungen ansehen, andere nicht. Die müsst ihr ja niemandem zeigen ;) Viel Spaß!

Take your time to access your collection of pictures. Which ones seem to go together naturally? Which colors would complete the composition? Does the arrangement call for a quote or a diary entry? Start cutting and glueing away. And don't be surprised - you will love some pages and others you won't. That's to expect and you don't need to show anyone the less fabulous results ;) Have fun!

Den heutigen Post widme ich meiner Lieblingsfarbe, die Glücksgefühle in mir hervorrruft, besonders wenn sie in einem Design gut eingesetzt ist. Mit Pink habe ich schon lange keine Affäre mehr, nein, das ist wahre Liebe.

A Self Portrait

Während eines Kreativ-Workshops in der Arbeit sollten wir aus Magazinausschnitten ein Selbstportrait zusammenstellen, in 15 Minuten. Das hat richtig Spaß gemacht. Daheim habe ich eine ganze Sammlung an Kleinkram und Bildern, die mich ausmachen. Also wiederholte ich die Übung zu Hause ohne Zeitdruck. Ganz schön rosa geworden, das Ganze. 

During a creative workshop at work we had to put together a self portrait from magazine snippets in 15 minutes. That was fun. At home I have collected so many bits and pieces that are me that I wanted to do a collage like that again but without the time pressure. Somehow it turned out very pink. Don't judge me.

Designwiesel Will Get a Facelift

Seit einiger Zeit bin ich etwas unzufrieden mit meinem Blog, er ist nicht so designwieselig wie ich ihn gerne hätte. Um das zu ändern, habe ich mir zunächst eine Liste von Zielen für diesen Blog gemacht (Notiz am Rande: Ich liebe Listen! Das ist vermutlich auch der Grund für meine Notizbuch-Sammelwut). Nachdem ich meine Ziele auf Papier gebracht hatte, machte ich mich mit dem Moodboard Konzept von Breanna Rose daran, die aesthetische Richtung zu bestimmen. Das hat dermaßen viel Spaß gemacht, dass ich schon überlege wofür ich als nächstes ein Moodboard bauen könnte. Aber immer schön langsam: Heute erblickt erst einmal der aesthetische Richtungsanzeiger für designwiesel das Licht der Internetwelt. Ich bin gespannt, wie sich dieses Projekt entwickelt.

For some time now I've been thinking that this little blog space of mine does not look as designwiesel-y as I'd like it to do. To get there I made a list of goals of this blog (side note: I love lists! That is probably the reason why I collect notebooks like mad). After having jotted down my goals I started to determine the aesthetic direction in which this blog should go by using Breanna Rose's moodboard approach. It was so much fun that I guess I will find a ton of more reasons to build moodboards. For now please say hi to the aesthetic groundwork for designwiesel's redesign. I am quite excited how this project will develop further.

LUIBAN: Stationery That Might Make Me Broke

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich diesen Berliner Schreibwarenladen in einem City Guide von Elle entdeckt. Ich war so aufgeregt, dass Nates Alarmglocken sofort läuteten. "Zum Glück ist dieser Laden weit weit weg!", rief er aus. "Sie haben einen Onlineshop", antwortete ich. Ich wette, er konnte in jener Nacht nicht schlafen. Ich auch nicht. War viel zu beschäftigt, eine Wunschliste zusammenzustellen. Heute teile ich sie hier. Sollte ich mal 200 Euro auf der Straße finden, hierin würde ich sie investieren.

I discovered this stationery shop in Berlin a few weeks ago in Elle's Berlin Guide. I got really excited in a way that Nate got alarmed. "Luckily that shop is far away!", he exclaimed. "They have an online shop", I replied. I guess he couldn't sleep that night. I couldn't either. I made up a wish list in my head. Today I share it with you. This is what I'd spend 200 Euros on if I found them on the street.

Beloved Magnolia

Ganz in der Nähe des Büros steht ein Magnolienbaum. Wochenlang habe ich die Knospen beobachtet und auf die Blüte hingefiebert. Letzte Woche endlich war es soweit. Der Baum stand in voller Pracht und ich stand mit meiner Kamera bereit. Voilà!

Close to my workplace there is this magnolia tree. I've been watching the buds for weeks, longing for those beautiful flowers to pop out. Last week finally the tree stood in full bloom. A majestic view for sure. Here you are.

Collecting Beautiful Paper Stuff

Ich sammle schöne Dinge. Dabei rede ich nicht von kuratierten Sammlungen. Es ist nur so, dass ich schöne Dinge nicht mehr aus den Händen gebe, wenn sie erst einmal mir gehören. Mit der Zeit ergibt das eine beachtliche Sammlung. Oder mehrere, um ehrlich zu sein. Heute habe ich zwei meiner Sammlungen fotografiert. Sie haben ihr Grundmaterial gemein, Papier. Papierkram und Notizbücher.

I collect beautiful things. I am not talking about curated collections. It just so happens that I feel attached to certain things and if they get into my fingers I wouldn't let them go. Over times this makes one heck of a collection. Or several collections to be honest. Today I took pictures of two collections. They are related through their basic material, paper. Paper stuff and paper notebooks.

Diese Papiersammlung ist Fake, ich habe sie genau so gekauft. Present & Correct verkauft fertige Papiersammlungen. Ja, wirklich. Und Leute wie ich kaufen sie dann. Man bekommt ein Päckchen, ohne zu wissen, was drin ist und da ist dann zum Beispiel eine alte Karteikarte dabei, eine Berlin-Karte aus der DDR oder sogar Einpackpapier für Schmalz. Und solche Sachen mich glücklich. Meine eigene echte Papiersammlung sollte ich aber auch unbedingt einmal vorstellen. 

This paper collection is fake. I bought it like that. Present & Correct sells complete paper collections. Yeah, really. And people like me go buy them. You get a little package not knowing what's inside. There may be an old file card, an old library card complete with pocket or an old German packaging for lard. And stuff like that makes me happy. I should really introduce my real paper collection one day.

Und dann gibt es da noch Notizbücher und Target. Diese Kombination hat mich einiges gekostet über Weihnachten in den USA. Aber nicht zu viel, schließlich war es Target. Wie ich Notizbücher liebe! Ich benutze fast keine, aber das hält mich keineswegs davon ab, sie zu wollen. Meine beiden Lieblingsmarken sind Moleskine und Rifle Paper. Wenn ihr noch mehr schöne Marken kennt, verratet sie mir bitte, ich hab noch ein wenig Kleingeld übrig.

And then there are notebooks and Target. This combination cost me quite some bucks over Christmas in the States. Not too much though since it was Target. But man do I love pretty notebooks! I hardly use any but that doesn't stop my from wanting them. My two favorite brands: Moleskine and Rifle Paper. If you know more beautiful brands, please tell me. I got some change left.

Photography Workshop With Kate Noelle

Am 17. August 2013 habe ich zum ersten Mal im Leben eine Spiegelreflexkamera bedient. Sie war geliehen. Ich wollte sie nicht zurückgeben. Schuld war Kate Noelle, eine begnadete kalifornische Fotografin, deren Workshop ich an dem Tag besuchte. Was ich zu erwarten hatte, wusste ich nicht wirklich, aber als Bloggerin fühle ich mich verpflichtet zumindest halbwegs anständige Fotos hinzubekommen. Ohne Anleitung hatte ich mich jedoch nie an eine ernst zu nehmende Kamera gewagt. Zu viel, was ich mit meiner Neugier kaputt machen könnte. Kate kam wie gerufen. Der Workshop fand bei meiner Freundin Gabriella statt und der Empfang war herrlich.

On August 17th 2013 I operated a reflex camera for the first time in my life. It was a borrowed one and I only gave it back reluctantly. It was Kate Noelle's fault, an exceptionally gifted photographer from California. I went to a workshop she offered that day. I did not really know what to expect but as a blogger I feel obliged to offer you pictures that are at least acceptable. Without instructions though I wouldn't have dared to touch a serious camera. Too much fancy stuff I might damage with my curiosity. Kate came right on cue. The workshop took place at my friend Gabriella's house and the setup was pretty amazing.

I loved our little welcome packages with a Moleskine notebook, some beautiful greeting cards by We Heart Paper, a discount card for Artifact Uprising and those cute little satchels by Saturday Morning Pancakes. Oh, and I also love flowers and cake which you may or may not have already realized as readers of this blog.

After so much theory that I felt my head must explode any minute we went outside into the real world of photography. First victim: Nate Hershey, better known as Superman. And now you know the truth.

Jetzt muss ich etwas gestehen: Die meisten Bilder hatten eine Nachbearbeitung in Photoshop dringend nötig. Nun, ich bin eine Anfängerin und Gott sei Dank auch Grafikdesignerin. Aber nun zu den Bildern. Oben sind alte Freunde im Bild, unten neue. Nach dem Workshop blieben manche von uns in Kontakt. Wie schön ist das denn?

Now I have to admit one thing: Most of these pictures needed some touch up in Photoshop. Well I'm a beginner and thank God I am also a graphic designer. But now to the pictures. In the top row some old friends of mine, below some new. Some of us stayed in contact after the workshop. How sweet is that?

Beim Badputzen ist mir heute wieder einmal die unterschiedliche Farbigkeit der Pflegeprodukte von Nate und mir aufgefallen. Ich musste Fotos machen. Meine Produkte sind größtenteils weiß mit ein wenig rosé, in seinen dominieren blau und schwarz. Das hat mich an meine Bachelor-Arbeit in Linguistik erinnert, in der ich die Werbesprache verglichen habe, mit der Männer und Frauen angesprochen werden. Kosmetik war eine der untersuchten Kategorien. Mir fiel damals auf, dass in Werbungen, die an Frauen gerichtet sind, häufig Wörter wie 'perfekt', 'rein' und 'Forschung' zu lesen waren wohingegen Männer häufig 'zurückschlagen' mussten oder ihre 'Falten bekämpfen' mussten. Das könnte ein wenig die Farbigkeit der Produkte erklären. Zu einem Kampf passen keine sanften Töne, da braucht es die Farben von Nacht und Gewitter. Frauen hingegen sollen sich wohl behütet fühlen mit ihren gründlich erforschten und reinen Produkten. Was meint ihr?

While cleaning the bathroom today I noticed once again how different the body care products of me and my husband look. I had to take pictures. Mine are almost all white and rose, his are a lot more blue and black. That reminded me of my Bachelor thesis in linguistics about how men and women are addressed in ads. Cosmetics was one of the categories under observation. It struck me that while women are often addressed with words like 'perfect', 'pure' and 'research', men have to 'fight back' and 'fight wrinkles'. This might also explain the difference in coloring a bit. Tender tones don't match a fight. It calls for the colors of the night and of weather.  Women on the other side should feel pampered with their well researched and pure products. What do you think?

In a Heisty Mood - If There Is a Thing Like That

Letztes Wochenende in Hamburg habe ich nicht nur mein Grafikdesign-Studium abgeschlossen und zwei Tage die Stadt bewundert, sondern mit Nate auch alte Freunde besucht. Sarah und Mathias lebten vor nicht allzu langer Zeit noch in Nürnberg. Inzwischen bewohnen sie ein hübsches hamburger Backsteinhäuschen, in dem Mathias auch sein Atelier hat. Das wollte ich natürlich sehen. Und am liebsten einpacken und mitnehmen. Seine Landschaftsgemälde abstrahiert er gerade ein wenig, was die Stimmung der Szenen noch stärker betont. Ich liebe sie. Das Bild links neben dem Tisch ist jedoch kein Gemälde, sondern eine seiner Farbpaletten. Die eigentlich auch Kunst sind, finde ich.

Last weekend in Hamburg I not only completed my graphic design degree and walked through the city in awe but Nate and I also visited old friends. Sarah and Mathias used to live in Nuremberg. Now they inhabit a pretty Hamburg brick house where Mathias also has his studio. I wanted to see that, of course. And wrap it up to take it all with me. He is about to abtract his landscape paintings just a bit. That puts across the mood even better. I love it. The picture next to the table is no painting though but one of his painting palettes. Which I think are art as well.

Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, wann eines dieser Schönheiten unsere Wohnung ziert. Dabei stellen sich gar nicht wenige Fragen. Was passt besser zu unserem Zuhause? Ein kleines 20x30cm Bild, kombiniert mit anderen Bildern? Oder doch ein großes 80x100cm Bild, das eine Wand für sich alleine haben darf? Ich glaube, ich sollte die Wände, die in Frage kommen, fotografieren und in Photoshop unterschiedlich bebildern, um die Wirkung zu testen. Klingt aufwändig, aber es geht hier schließlich um die Anschaffung unseres ersten Originals. Ja, ich bin aufgeregt.

It's just a matter of time until one of these beauties adorns our apartment. Before that can happen though there are questions to answer. What fits better into our home? A small 20x30cm picture combined with other art? Or should we opt for a big 80x100cm picture that will have a wall of its own? I think I'll have to take pictures of the walls that are in the run for getting art. I could place different paintings on them in Photoshop to see how they would look. That sounds like quite a bit of work but we are talking about our first purchase of original art here. And yes, I am excited!

du bist der Grund, warum ich mich morgens aufs Büro freue. Schon auf dem Weg zur Arbeit denke ich an das warme gluckernde Geräusch, welches das Wasser macht, wenn es über dich in die French Press gegossen wird. Musik in meinen Ohren ist das.
Ohne dich sind Samstagmorgende kein Wochenende. Dein Duft erfüllt die Küche und dein sanfter Geschmack weckt mich langsam aus meinem langen Schlaf. Ohne dich kein Frühstück, ohne dich kein Nachmittag. Dein Duft ist mir immer lieb. Du wirst es nicht glauben, aber du bist das Einzige, auf das ich immer Lust bekomme, wenn ich es auf Bildern sehe. You are the reason I am looking forward to the office in the morning. When I walk to work I already think of the warm and gurgling sound the water makes when it is poured over you into the french press. That is music to my ears.
Without you saturday mornings are no weekend. Your flavor fills the kitchen and your soft taste slowly wakes me from my long sleep. Without you there is no breakfast, without you there is no afternoon. Your scent is always dear to me. You will not believe this but you are the only thing I always crave as soon as I see pictures of it. Not even cake can do that to me. But you I want as soon as I see you. And I don't care if it is 10 p.m. already!
You sweeten each and every day. You make me happy. You fill my head with ideas and more often than not also with nonsene. That is why I love you. Even more than chocolate.

Hunger

Letztes Wochenende haben wir Freunde in Berlin besucht, und weil uns eine seehr lange Bahnfahrt bevorstand, ging ich vorher noch kurz wildern im internationalen Zeitungsladen im Nürnberger Bahnhof. Und da lag er - dieser Katalog an britischem Premium-Printerzeugnis. The Hunger - For the culturally and visually hungry. Jepp, gemeint war ich! Ich durfte mir das Magazin nur kaufen unter der Voraussetzung, ich trage das fünf Kilo Teil und jubele es nicht meinem Mann unter. Ich garantierte dies selbstverständlich sofort, nur um ihm das Monster später doch in den Koffer zu stecken. Aber The Hunger zu schleppen ist eine Ehre. Die Vorschau unten ist nur ein läppischer Versuch, diesem Werk Rechnung zu tragen. Es ist herrlich! Auch wenn mein Mann sagt, er bekäme Augenkrebs vom vielen Neo-Pink.

Last weekend we visited friends in Berlin. As we had a loong train ride ahead of us I went poaching in the international newspaper shop at the Nürnberg main railway station. And there it was - that wonderful and hefty piece of British print gorgeousness. The Hunger - For the culturally and viasually hungry. Oh, how that was talking to me! I was allowed to buy the magazine providing that I would carry those ten extra pounds myself and not trick my husband into carriying it. Of course I was willing to do that! But in the end I put it into the suitcase he was in charge of - I know, that was not exactly fair. But honestly, it is an honor to schlepp The Hunger. My pictures below really can't put up with the real thing. It is simply superb! Even if my husband states that all that neon pink is like an acid attack on the retina.

Outside the box

Es gibt kaum etwas schwierigeres, als über die gewohnten Grenzen hinaus zu denken. Mir geht es gerade mit gleich drei Gestaltungsprojekten so. Ich hoffe, der Knoten in meinem Kopf löst sich bald!

There is hardly anything more difficult than thinking outside the box. That is my problem with three design projects at the same time right now. I hope my head finds new solutions soon!
