Testing Green Beauty Products: Body Care

In der zweiten Testreihe stelle ich euch Körperöle und -cremes vor, die ich den letzten Monaten getestet habe. In der ersten Reihe ging es um Haarpflege, hier klicken, solltet ihr die Auswertung verpasst haben. Bei Körperpflegeprodukten hatte ich deutlich mehr Glück als bei Shampoos und Spülungen. Kann man da einfach weniger falsch machen? Das ist eine ernst gemeinte Frage, also Chemiker bitte vor.

The second test series is all about body oils and milks. The first one was about hair care. If you missed it, here you go. I was way more lucky with this test round than with shampoos and conditioners. Are body milks harder to ruin? This is an actual question, so if you happen to be a chemist, please explain! 

Mit Weleda Hautpflege kan man nichts falsch machen. In das Granatapfel Regenerations-Öl habe ich mich sofort verliebt. Es riecht gut, trpockene Haut fühlt sich damit traumhaft an und es ist sehr ergiebig.

Die Sanddorn Reichhaltige Pflegelotion hat eine leichtere Textur und ist daher besser geeignet für normale Haut. Wie auch das Öl riecht es gut und fühlt sich gut an. Los, geht shoppen! Ich sollte für dieses kostenlose Marketing bezahlt werden. Hey Weleda-Team, ein paar Gratisprodukte wären auch okay. Ich habe übrigens bald Geburtstag *zwinker*.

You simply can't go wrong with Weleda skin care. It's fantastic! I fell in love with their Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil. It smells good, makes dry skin feel awesome and it will last you long. Only wins here.

The Sea Buckthorn Replenishing Body Lotion is of lighter texture and better for normal skin. Again, smells good, feels good. Go buy Weleda body care stuff! They should pay me for this free marketing, really. Hey Weleda Team, I'd also be okay with some freebies. My Birthday's coming up, by the way *wink*.

Dr. Hauschka macht das Testen einfach und zum Shopping-Vergnügen mit ihren kleinen Einsteigerkits. Da geht mir ja schon bei der Verpackung das Herz auf. 

Getestet habe ich die Körpermilch Quitte, das Pflegeöl Citrone Lemongrass und das Körperbalsam Rose. Alle waren sehr gut zu meiner Haut, aber bei diesen Produkten ist ein wenig Vorsicht geboten. Der Duft von Quitte ist nicht jedermanns Sache und auch der Rosenduft ist herausfordernd intensiv. Citrone Lemongrass jedoch, ohhhh ja!

Dr. Hauschka makes testing easy and fun with their pretty little starter kits. I would have bought them for the packaging alone!

I've tried the Quince Body Moisturizer, the Lemon Lemongrass Body Oil and the Rose Bodymoisturizer. While they were all good for my skin, my nose did not get along with all of them. Quince is definitely not everyone's cup of tea and also their rose scent is quite a challenge in its intensity. But lemon lemongrass, ohhh yeah, I'll have more of that!

Primavera legt großen Wert auf Fair Trade. Jedem Produkt liegt eine kleine Herstellungsgeschichte bei, sehr sympathisch. Das Körperöl Ingwer Limette verwende ich seit zwei Jahren und liebe es immer noch. Ich liebe Körperöle grundsätzlich, was andere Mädels mit trockener Haut sicher nachvollziehen können.

Das letzte Produkt in dieser Reihe ist auch das, welches mich am meisten überrascht hat. Günstiger als alverde wird es nicht, wenn es um Naturkosmetik geht. Dennoch ist ihre Macadamianuss Körperbutter ganz außerordentlich! Günstig ist offensichtlich nicht gleichbedeutend mit billig.

Primavera is a brand with a strong emphasis on fair trade which I love a lot. With every product comes the story of its production. I've been using their Organic Body Oil Ginger & Lime for two years now and I still love it. I guess I just love body oils - which dry skin girls will totally understand.

Let's come to the last product tested that also surprised me most. alverde is the cheapest green lable you can get in Germany. Yet their Macadamia Nut Body Butter is outstanding! Cheap does not always indicate low quality it seems.

Testing Green Beauty Products: Hair Care

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich angefangen, mich mit Kosmetik zu beschäftigen, die weder Schadstoffe enthält noch an Tieren getestet wurde und am besten auch die Umwelt schont. Das erste Mal habe ich hier darüber geschrieben. Seitdem habe ich mir vorgenommen, so viel Kosmetik auf diesem Gebiet zu testen wie möglich und meine Erfahrungen hier mit euch zu teilen. Dabei konzentriere ich mich auf bezahlbare Produkte und lasse die Luxusprodukte außen vor. Die sind sicherlich auch ganz toll, aber ich glaube, dass günstigere Produkte eine größere Chance haben, wirklich etwas in der Kosmetikproduktion zu verändern. Je günstiger es ist, auf natürlichere Produkte umzusteigen, desto mehr Menschen können sich den Umstieg auch leisten. 

Ein Hinweis gleich zu Anfang: Nicht alle untersuchten Produkte fallen unter die Kategorie Naturkosmetik. Zwar sind alle frei von Schadstoffen und wurden auch nicht an Tieren getestet, doch manche sind reine Naturprodukte, andere nicht. Manche engagieren sich ausgesprochen für Fair Trade und Umweltschutz, andere nicht so sehr. Ich habe zu jedem vorgestellten Produkt recherchiert, damit ihr einen guten Überblick darüber bekommt, welche Marke wofür steht. Los geht's mit Haarpflege.

A few weeks ago I started to get into green beauty. I wrote about it here for the first time. Since then I've committed myself to testing as many green beauty products as possible. Accessible beauty products, not the super expensive, luxurious ones. While they are surely mighty fine, I think the more affordable products have a better chance to really change the way we care about nature and animals. The more affordable going green is, the more people will be able to catch up on it. I think it shouldn't be too expensive to care for our planet and ourselves. If you plan to go more natural, too, you will like this new series. 

First important thing to know: Not all green beauty products are alike. While all of them are free of animal testing and harmful substances, some are all natural, some are not. Some are deeply involved in fair trade projects, others are not. I did some research on all the products that I feature so you'll get a good overview of which brand stands for what. Let's get started with hair care.

The Bodyshop ist die vermutlich bekannteste Marke, wenn es um "grüne" Kosmetik geht. Die Produkte sind zwar nicht rein natürlich, aber Bodyshop macht sich weltweit stark gegen Tierversuche und für Fair Trade sowie Umweltschutz. Da ich gelesen habe, dass der Umstieg auf Naturkosmetik für Haare nicht ganz einfach ist, habe ich erst mal die light Version getestet.

The Bodyshop is probably the best known brand when it comes to green cosmetics. Though their products are not all natural, they fight against animal testing. The Bodyshop also sticks up for fair trade and environmental protection. I have read that the transition to purely natural ingredients isn't easy for the hair, so I started off with testing this light version.

In der zweiten Runde habe ich sehr günstige Bio-Naturmarken getestet. alverde macht sich auch für Naturschutz und Fair Trade stark. lavera macht zu den letzten beiden Punkten keine Angaben.

In the second round I tested very low priced all natural products. alverde also helps protecting the environment and supports fair trade. lavera does not give a statement on these.

Als nächstes kam Weleda an die Reihe. Ich weiß nicht, wann sie ihre Verpackungen neu designed haben, aber seitdem wirken die Produkte nicht mehr nur wie für meine Mutter, sondern sind auch für mich anziehend. Weleda scheint auch ein bisschen die Welt verbessern zu wollen, natürlich praktizieren sie Fair Trade und schützen die Umwelt.

Next on my list was Weleda. I have no idea when they had their redesign but finally their products are appealing to me, too. And not only to my mother. Weleda also seems to want to turn the planet into a nicer place. Of course they practice fair trade and protect the environment.

Ich habe die Glanz Haarspülung von Sante für den Schluss aufgehoben, weil sie mein Lieblings-Conditioner geworden ist. Schön, dass sie auch Fair Trade unterstützen und Umweltschutz als selbstverständlich ansehen.

Cosmetics That Are Good for You And the Planet

Ich liebe gute Hautpflegeprodukte. Manchmal gehe ich nur zur Entspannung in eine Drogerie, um mich an all den schönen Döschen satt zu sehen und an allem neuen zu schnuppern. Mich reizen die unterschiedlichen Texturen von Cremes und ich bin neugierig, was es für Neuigkeiten gibt. 

Seit ein paar Monaten habe ich mein Spektrum an Marken jedoch stark eingeschränkt. Tierversuche, Umweltschutz und Fair Trade wurden Themen für mich. Seitdem lese ich bewusst über Inhaltsstoffe nach, erkundige mich, wie ein Unternehmen wirtschaftet und versuche sicher zu gehen, dass kein Tier für meine Schönheitspflege leiden muss. Am sichersten geht man dabei natürlich mit reiner Naturkosmetik. The Body Shop ist nicht rein Natur, aber zumindest nicht schädlich, verzichtet auf Tierversuche und achtet auf Fair Trade sowie umweltschützende Produktion. Bei ToxFox kann man Kosmetik auf Schädlichkeit prüfen, über die man sonst keine entsprechende Informationen findet. Sehr praktisch!

I love nice skin care products. Sometimes I go to drugstores just to relax among all the beautiful packaging and nice smells. I'm curious about the different textures of products and I always want to know what's new on the market.

A few months ago I started reducing my choice of skin care brands though. Topics like animal testing, environmental protection and fair trade have become more and more important to me. I started reading about the ingredients of cosmetics as I want to make sure they don't give me an extra dosis of hormones. I want to know how ethical a brand makes its money and also I want to make sure no animal has to suffer for my beauty routine. Surely purely natural cosmetics rule. The Body Shop does not offer all natural products but all ingredients are safe, the company rejects animal testing and engages in fair trade projects and tries to protect the environment. When I don't find information on a product, ToxFox is my place to go. Very useful!

My New Night Routine

Meine abendliche Pflegeroutine besteht momentan komplett aus Body Shop Produkten. Das Aloe Gentle Facial Wash entfernt Make-up und Wimperntusche einfach und ohne in den Augen zu ziepen. Aber es riecht ein wenig komisch, daher werde ich mich nach einer Alternative umsehen. Ihr kennt eine? Her mit euren Tipps! Ich bin noch neu auf diesem Kosmetik-Terrain.

Ich mache gerade eine Kur mit Vitamin C Pflegekapseln. Dieses Serum fühlt sich an wie Samt auf der Haut. Wahnsinn! Wirklich sehr schwer zu beschreiben, wie angenehm es sich anfühlt und riecht. Kaufen! Zuletzt folgt die Vitamin E Nachtcreme, die angenehm riecht und auch eine schöne Textur hat. Weitere Posts dieser Art folgen.

My nightly skin care routine is made up of Body Shop products entirely right now. The Aloe Gentle Facial Wash removes all make-up and even mascara easily and without burning in your eyes. It smells funny though so I'm looking for something else after this. Do you know a good alternative? Tell me! I am new to this kind of cosmetics. 

I use Vitamin C capsules for a short term extra treatment right now and I tell you guys, this stuff is simply awesome. The serum feels like velvet on your skin. Really, try it yourself, it's hard to explain how good it feels and smells. I finish up with the Vitamin E night cream which smells good and also has a nice texture. More posts on cosmetics to come.

Facial at Home

Vor einiger Zeit war ich auf der Suche nach einem Spa. Ich hatte Lust auf eine ausgiebige Gesichtsbehandlung. Ziemlich bald musste ich jedoch feststellen, dass die meisten Kosmetiksalons in Nürnberg gegen sechs oder halb sieben schließen. Wie soll das gehen? Arbeiten andere Kundinnen nicht Vollzeit? Schließlich fand ich ein Spa, das bis acht geöffnet hat, aber oh sah das nach 90ern aus - alles weiß, rot und hässlich. Da kann ich nun wirklich nicht hin. Wie soll man sich denn in den 90ern entspannen? Schließlich kam mir die Idee, dass ich das Ganze auch zu Hause machen könnte. Ich habe ein wenig im Web recherchiert und sehr viele Anleitungen gefunden. Meine drei Favoriten habe ich dann kombiniert. Vielen Dank an Chamy, divine caroline und Lauren Conrad! Ihr habt meinen Montagabend gerettet. 

Some time ago I was looking for a spa. I longed for a facial simply for the joy of being pampered after work. I soon learned that most spas in Nuremberg close by six or half past which makes me ask: Who goes there? Aren't other women working full time? I finally found one that is open till eight but oh that spa looked so 90s - all white and red and ugly! I couldn't make myself go there. How can one relax in the 90s? Finally it struck me that I could do the whole thing at home. No closing hours there! So I started my web research and found lots and lots of instructions. In the end I combined my three favorites - Thank you Chamy, divine caroline and Lauren Conrad! You made my Monday evening.

Die Produkte habe ich für meine trockene Haut gewählt. Die Marken sind natürlich Geschmackssache. Aber wenn ihr ebenfalls trockene und empfindliche Gesichtshaut habt, kann ich alle hier verwendeten Produkte empfehlen. Doch nun zu den einzelnen Schritten eines Facials.

I chose products to suit my dry skin. The brands are a matter of taste but if you have dry and sensitive skin, too I can recommend all of these products. But lets get to the step-by-step of a facial.

Schritt 1: Make-up entfernen und Haut reinigen. Mit Perfect Clean von L'Oréal geht das in einem Schritt. Die Waschcreme wird mit dem feinen Kunststoffbürstchen, das dabei ist, im Gesicht aufgeschäumt und mit warmen Wasser abgespült. Ziept nicht in den Augen und im Gegensatz zu Abschminkcremes und -lotionen strapaziert man die Haut nicht mit Wattepads. Das könnte euch die ein oder andere Falte später sparen.

Schritt 2: Nun geht es ans Peeling. Es ist nicht so einfach, eines zu finden, das für trockene Haut geeignet ist, aber die Reinigende Maske von Merz Spezial passt gut. Meinen Lippen habe ich auch ein Peeling verpasst, allerdings ein selbst gemachtes. Das Rezept findet ihr bei Lauren Conrad. Ich habe nur die Hälfte gemacht und hatte immer noch etwas übrig. Sehr zu empfehlen!

Schritt 3: Ein Gesichtswasser erfrischt und stellt den pH-Wert der Haut nach Reinigung und Peeling wieder her. Neu entdeckt und sehr zufrieden: L'Oréal Hydra Active 3. Auf das Gesichtswasser folgt ein Dampfbad, um die Poren zu öffnen. Dazu heißes Wasser in eine Schüssel gießen, den Kopf darüber beugen und ihn mit einem Handtuch bedecken. Entspannt atmen. Das sollte etwa zehn Minuten dauern. Vermutlich wollt ihr euch ab und zu aufrichten, um kühlere Luft zu atmen.

Step 1: Remove make-up and cleanse your skin. With Perfect Clean by L'Oréal that is one step. The cream cleanser turns into a gentle mousse while applying it with the fine scrublet coming with it. Rinse off with warm water and you are done. The cleanser doesn't irritate your eyes and also saves your skin from being wiped with cotton pads that make-up removers often require. That might save you a wrinkle or two later.

Step 2: Choose a peeling for the next step. It is not so easy to find the right peeling for dry skin but this one from Merz Spezial works well. I also used a peeling on my lips but that one I made myself. Go over to Lauren Conrad for the recipe. It's great (and tastes good)! I halved the ingredients though and still had some leftover. 

Step 3: Tone your skin to refresh it and restore your skins pH after cleansing and peeling. I recently discovered L'Oréal Hydra Active 3 and like it a lot. After toning steam your face to open the pores. Pour hot water into a bowl, bend your head over it and cover it with a towel. Breath relaxed. Do this for about ten minutes. You will probably want to lift your head from time to time for some cooler air.

Schritt 4: Masken gibt es für alle Haupttypen und jeden Bedarf. Meine Wahl fiel auf die herrlich duftende Glättende Pflegemaske von Weleda.

Schritt 5: Ein Feuchtigkeitsserum ist kein muss, aber tut der Haut sehr gut. Ich habe L'Oréal Skin Perfection verwendet. Sehr wahrscheinlich wegen der schönen Verpackung. Aber es ist auch tatsächlich gut.

Schritt 6: Zum Schluss wird noch eine Feuchtigkeitscreme aufgetragen. Bei mir war das die neue Brighten-up creme von bebe (danke Steffi!).


Step 4: Apply a mask. There are masks for every skin type and every need. I decided on Weleda's Smoothing Care Mask. It smells like heaven!

Step 5: A moisturizing serum is no must but very nice for your skin. I used L'Oréal Skin Perfection which I probably bought for its nice packaging. But it is also really good!

Step 6: Finally apply a moisturizing cream. I used bebe's new Brighten-up creme (thank you, Steffi!).

Ich wollte sehen, was in diesen 90 Minuten passiert, also habe ich ein vorher und nachher ein Foto gemacht. In beiden Bildern versuche ich möglichst gleich in die Kamera zu lächeln. Nach diesen entspannenden eineinhalb Stunden habe ich meine Augen jedoch deutlich weiter auf bekommen. Herrlich war das!

I wanted to see what these 90 minutes do to me so I took before and after pics. I tried to smile into the camera the same way but clearly after one and a half hour of pampering it was a lot easier to keep my eyes open. It was wonderful!

Instant Glamour

Ich stehe keine zwei Stunden vor dem Spiegel. Das habe ich nicht einmal vor meiner Hochzeit gemacht. Wenn ich mich hübsch machen will, muss es schnell gehen. Zum Glück gibt es Dinge, die das einfach machen. Lancômes Artliner zum Beispiel. Dieser flüssige Eyeliner wird mit einem sehr präzisen Schwämchen aufgetragen. Klare Linien garantiert, sogar wenn die Hände so unruhig sind wie meine. Zugegeben, er ist teuer. Umsteigen würde ich trotzdem nie. Mein erster vor 15 Jahren war ein Geschenk von meiner besten Freundin in der Schule. Er war schon halb leer, ihre Mutter benutze ihn nicht mehr, meinte sie (warum?). Seitdem habe ich ihn nur zwei Mal nachkaufen müssen. Er trocknet auch bei längerer Nichtbenutzung nicht ein. Bin begeistert. Den Guerlain Lipgloss habe ich erst vor kurzem geschenkt bekommen. Er liegt weich und leicht glänzend auf den Lippen. Klebt nicht, fällt nicht auf, macht einfach nur weich und schön. Sehr zu empfehlen. Die Ohrringe könnten auch andere sein, Hauptsache groß und glitzern. Die Party kann losgehen!

I won't spend two hours in front of the mirror. I haven't even done that on my wedding day. When I want to pretty up it has to be fast. Luckily there are some products that help with that. Lancôme's Artliner for instance. This fluid eyeliner is applied with a very precize foam tip. You get beautiful and exact lines even if your hands are as shaky as mine. It is expensive for sure. Still I would not switch to another product. My first one 15 years ago was a gift from my best friend at school. It was half empty and she said her mum wouldn't use it anymore (why?). Since then I have only bought two new bottles. The Artliner doesn't dry out even if you don't use it for a long time. Pretty awesome. The Guerlain lip gloss is a recent gift. It feels soft on your lips and not a bit sticky. It also adds a very nice shine that looks quite natural. Anything but flashy, just soft and beautiful. I can only recommend it. The earrings could also be other ones. Only make sure they are big and glitzy. Let the party start!
